With gobos and prisms, a single fixture can project rotating patterns across the floor and walls, replacing what would otherwise be a dozen static lights.

Beam angle is the most important technical difference. A typical LED par has a beam angle of 25 to 60 degrees, designed to flood an area. A beam moving head might have a beam angle of 1 to 4 degrees, designed to cut through the air. Coverage follows from that. One par can wash a large flat surface. One moving head covers a large area only by moving; when pointed at a single spot, its footprint is narrow. When people say a moving head looks more powerful, they usually mean it is more visible in haze, not that it covers more wall.

Control channels also separate the two. A simple RGBA par needs about four to ten DMX channels. A full-feature moving head needs 16 to 30 channels.
